FIRST MILE AND A HALF OF TUNNEL COMPLETED

Our tunnel boring machine Rachel has completed over 1.6 miles of tunneling and has finished tunneling under Machado Lake in Harbor Regional Park. Before continuing with the next 5.4 miles, Rachel stopped under the southwestern edge of Harbor Regional Park. There, crews performed planned maintenance over two weeks. Rachel resumed tunneling and is going underneath Gaffey Street.

INITIAL WORK AT ROYAL PALMS BEACH

Construction-related activities will start at Royal Palms Beach in early 2023. Small exploratory holes will be dug around our property at the beach to accurately determine the location of the underground structure that connects our existing tunnels and ocean outfalls. This work, which will take about 3 to 4 months, will help avoid surprises and delays in the larger work later. The eastern side of the parking lot will remain open to the public, but access to the western side of the parking lot may be limited.

STUDENTS ENJOY FREE EDUCATIONAL BOAT TRIPS

In partnership with the Think Earth Foundation, we provided free, 3-hour boat excursions aboard Think Watershed's marine science floating lab to schools in Carson and San Pedro. On board the floating lab, students learned about marine life and the watershed's impact on the marine environment. For more about the floating lab, see https://thinkearth.org/think-watershed.

LEARN HOW WATER IS PURIFIED ON THE WATER JOURNEY FIELD TRIP

In partnership with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, we are offering free Water Journey field trips, including reimbursing up to $500 in bus transportation for students. Schools in Carson, Wilmington, Harbor City and San Pedro are eligible.

On this field trip, students will visit the Pure Water Southern California Demonstration Facility and learn about water sources, aqueducts, conservation and water recycling. Afterwards, they will take a walking tour of the facility and learn about the technology used to purify water. The Water Journey concludes with a visit to the Bixby Marshland, a nearby 17-acre wetland. While on a nature walk, students will learn about native wildlife, plants and trees as well as how Native Americans used these resources in their everyday lives.

Trips are limited in number, so book early. Please contact Julie Patino at (562) 908-4288, ext. 2300 or juliepatino@lacsd.org to book a trip. Click here for a flyer on these field trips.

PURE WATER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW BEGINS

PURE WATER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW BEGINS

The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California have partnered on what could become the largest water recycling program in the nation. Pure Water Southern California would take cleaned wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson and purify it to produce a new, drought-resistant source of water for the region. At full scale, the program would produce enough purified water for 1.5 million people.

The scoping phase of the environmental review ended on November 14. During this phase, input was solicited from the public and agencies on what should be analyzed in the project’s Environmental Impact Report. The Draft Environmental Impact Report should be released for public review in summer 2023. Click here to learn more about this exciting program.
