Grand Opening of Advanced Purification Center

On October 10, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California were joined by federal, state and local water leaders to celebrate the start of operations at the Advanced Purification Center. This 500,000-gallon-per-day demonstration facility uses an innovative process to purify the cleaned water produced by the Sanitation Districts’ Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP). The facility will generate information needed for the potential future construction of a full-scale plant that could produce up to 150 million gallons of purified water per day – enough to serve more than 500,000 homes. JWPCP Tour for San Pedro Neighborhood Councils

On November 2, members of the Coastal, Central and Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Councils toured the JWPCP. Attendees learned about wastewater treatment, water recycling and how we convert waste into resources. They also visited the adjacent construction site for the Clearwater Project, where most construction activities will occur. If your organization would like a tour, please contact Mr. Glenn Acosta at (562) 908-4288, extension 2304, or visit our webpage.

Construction Update

Dragados, the company hired to build a new tunnel for the Clearwater Project, is building the access shaft that will be used to place the tunnel boring machine (TBM) below ground. A barrier to limit visibility and sound from construction has been installed along Figueroa Street and the south side of the site. The TBM should arrive in late 2020 and tunneling will begin in early 2021 after the access shaft is completed.

Speakers Bureau Program

The Sanitation Districts can provide speakers, at no cost, to your organization, business, or school. Our most popular presentation is an overview of the Sanitation Districts and how we convert waste into resources. We also provide more specific presentations on our wastewater (sewage), solid waste (trash), energy recovery and recycling programs. To request a presentation, please contact Ms. Michelle Vieville at (562) 908-4288, extension 2300, or michellevieville@lacsd.org. To request a Clearwater presentation, click the blue button below.
