Join Us for a Virtual Tour of the Tunnel Construction

On September 28 at 6:30 p.m., Russ Vakharia, a Districts' engineer who is overseeing construction, will take us into the tunnel as it is being built and show the tunnel boring machine Rachel in action. Rachel has finished tunneling under Figueroa, PCH and the 110 Freeway and is moving west under Harbor Regional Park. The new tunnel will protect local waterways by addressing aging infrastructure. To join us, use Zoom ID 865 1294 1177.

Pure Water Southern California: Creating a New Source of Water

With California experiencing the worst drought in 1,200 years, developing new sources of water is important to our region's sustainability. The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California have partnered on what could become the largest water recycling project in the nation. Pure Water Southern California, formerly known as the Regional Recycled Water Program, will take cleaned wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson and purify it to produce a new, drought-proof source of high-quality water for the region. When fully implemented, enough water would be produced to supply 1.5 million people. Click here to learn more about this exciting project, which is early in its planning and environmental review phase.

Learn How Water is Purified on the Water Journey Field Trip

This upcoming school year, in partnership with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, we are offering free Water Journey field trips to schools in Carson, Wilmington, Harbor City and San Pedro. This includes reimbursing up to $500 in bus transportation for students. On the Water Journey field trip, students will visit the Advanced Purification Center at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson and learn about water awareness, aqueducts, conservation and recycling. Afterwards, they will take a walking tour of the facility and learn about the technology used to purify water. The Water Journey will conclude with a visit to the Bixby Marshland, a nearby 17-acre wetland. While on a nature walk, students will learn about native wildlife, plants and trees as well as how Native Americans used these resources in their everyday lives.

Trips are limited in number, so book early. Please contact Julie Patino at (562) 908-4288, ext. 2300 or juliepatino@lacsd.org to book a trip. Click here for a flyer on these field trips.

Free Educational Boat Trips Offered to Schools

Starting this fall, in partnership with the Think Earth Foundation, we are offering a free, 3-hour boat excursion aboard Think Watershed's marine science floating lab to schools in Carson, Wilmington, Harbor City and San Pedro. Up to $500 in bus transportation to the boat dock in the Los Angeles Harbor will be reimbursed. On board the floating lab, students will learn about marine life and the watershed's impact on the marine environment.

Trips are limited in number, so book early. Please contact Julie Patino at (562) 908-4288, ext. 2300 or juliepatino@lacsd.org to book at trip. Click here for the flyer.

Tours and Educational Opportunities

We continue to offer educational presentations about environmental stewardship as well as virtual tours of our wastewater (sewage) treatment plants to schools in our service area. We recently added a presentation on how Rachel builds the tunnel as it digs. Our goal is to inspire careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). To request a tour or presentation, please click on the "request a presentation" button below.
